Freedom is a precious thing.
As a mother of twin girls, I needed the freedom to work on my own terms—the flexibility to work on my own timetable and from the location of my choice. In addition, I wanted to set the tone, create the culture, choose my colleagues and even my clients. Not too much to ask, right? 😊 These work conditions would obviously not come in a traditional job package.
But I did find that freedom when I started my own business, Higher Ed Insight. Not only did I access the freedom I sought, but my business engaged my passion: to support policies, programs, and nonprofits in creating educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth and adults. Having attended college and graduate school, eventually earning a Ph.D. in education policy and leadership, I know the doors that can open through education.
By creating my own business, I could use my particular gift sets in a position designed by me. My expertise in data, communication, and strategy has helped dozens of nonprofits, foundations, and colleges achieve their goals.
After 10 years of working for myself and driving the agenda for my work and my life, I can attest to the fact that anyone can start this enterprise-- you just need to know the right steps to succeed. HEI has grew steadily year after year, to the point where I could pay my own salary, hire contractors to work with me, and enjoy my work.
For years I have shared these steps informally over lunch with friends who wanted to start their own consulting business. But after attending the Best Year Every Blueprint weekend in San Diego in December of 2018, I was inspired to get all this advice down in a book to be accessed by whoever needed it.
Am I proud of my academic degrees, my business, and this book? Sure. But I am most proud of my daughters, who are precocious and caring and overall lovely. The three of us can be seen at the beach or hiking in the woods or the city, preparing meals or hosting parties for friends and family. Being their parent drives me to be a role model of someone who not only provides but also creates something good that can be shared with the world.
